Knife-Wielding Man Stabbed Six People In Annecy, France

 




A British girl who was one four young children stabbed at a playground in France was on holiday with her family, authorities have confirmed. 


The child has been taken to a hospital in Grenoble where she is in a critical condition following the attack in Annecy on Thursday morning. 


In the last hour, a prosecutor has confirmed a Dutch child and two from France were also targeted by the knife-wielding suspect, who was arrested. The children are aged between 22 months and three and all suffered life-threatening injuries.


French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne said the suspect had neither a criminal or psychiatric record and authorities say there is no evidence of a terrorist motive.


Ms Borne has confirmed the man is a Syrian national who had refugee status in Sweden. According to media reports, he shouted “in the name of Jesus Christ” twice during the rampage.

Ukraine refused yesterday to renew an agreement that allowed the country’s territory to be used as a corridor for Russian gas to travel to Europe, according to officials in both countries, NYT reports. The move is part of a broader campaign by Ukraine and its Western allies to undermine the ability of Russia to fund its war effort, but there are risks. Moscow could retaliate by bombing Ukraine’s pipelines, a vast network that has been largely spared over the past three years of conflict. Europe was prepared for the move, so analysts expect little effect on gas prices there. Hungary, Austria and several Balkan countries still use Russian gas delivered through Ukraine, but experts say that existing stockpiles and alternative supplies should prevent cuts to electricity and heating in those countries. Slovakia, which is still heavily dependent on Russian gas, threatened to retaliate against Ukraine.
